Howard County has a “Feed The Green Bin” program to encourage residents to participate in composting. According to a County study, “almost 30% of what we send to the landfill could be composted and turned into a valuable product!” Supported by the University of Maryland Extension program and local Master Gardeners, Howard County residents can find out about kitchen scarp and yard trim composting at the Miller library, Robinsons Nature Canter, Savage Library, and Alpha Ridge Landfill.

Howard County Residents can pick up a free backyard composting bin on scheduled days at each of the four locations. Visit https://www.howardcountymd.gov/public-works/backyard-composting and look for Compost Demonstrations.

The 2023 Compost Demonstration Schedule https://www.howardcountymd.gov/sites/default/files/2023-02/2023%20Schedule%20Compost.pdf lists the days and times to pick up a bin or participate in a drop-in program with Master Gardeners.
